Thermafleece CosyWool: Compression & Recovery Guide

Thermafleece CosyWool is compress-packed to minimise packaging waste and reduce the environmental impact of transportation from the factory.

Because it is compress packed, the insulation requires time to “loft” or return to its original thickness once opened.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

The speed of recovery depends heavily on temperature and humidity.

  • Standard Recovery: Typically reaches 85% thickness within 10 days and 100% thickness within 6 weeks.
  • Seasonal Variations:
    • Summer: Higher heat and humidity means recovery can take as little as 2 weeks.
    • Winter: Cold, dry conditions can more than double the recovery time.

The Science of “The Bounce Back”

Two main factors help the insulation regain its shape:

  • Moisture Absorption (The Fibres):

During manufacturing, moisture is removed. Once unpacked, the wool fibres naturally absorb moisture from the air and swell. Even though the wool takes on about 15% of its weight in water, the moisture bonds to the keratin, so the fibres feel completely dry to the touch.

  • Heat (The Binder):

The internal binder softens as it warms up. If delivered in winter, the binder may be stiff, slowing down expansion. However, once installed, the warmth of the building will soften the binder and allow the insulation to expand freely.

Tip: Don’t worry if it looks thin immediately after unpacking. The insulation is designed to “grow” into its full thermal performance as it acclimates to your building’s environment.
